The
major problems that face the human services professional
are multifold and is always an offshoot of the
modern social setup. One of the most important
issues is caring for the aged. Although there
are numerous professionals in the country who
are earning a lot out of their jobs, many are
reluctant to take care of their aged parents.
Most people are happy to let their
parents enroll in an old-age-care facility that
takes care of the old. However, most people seem
to forget that the old require social interaction
and the closeness of their loved ones, which many
old-age home facilities are not able to provide.
The human service professional can certainly help
to enhance the life and activities of the elderly
by devising many practices and activities that
are beneficial to their health and mind [Weinstein,
2004]
Similarly, the importance of the family and familial
values are getting degraded very much and people
are oriented towards a materialistic life. The
lack of importance given to the family and collectivism
has a severe effect on the social networks, and
impinges adversely on the well being of the society.
In fact, lack of family support
has been a major reason for drug abuse, and many
other social maladies that affect the young and
the old alike. It is however very difficult to
enhance family values in a society that is showing
a general trend towards selfishness and isolation.
The human service professional can advice, counsel
and mend many issues relating to discords in families
to arrive at a solution that is acceptable to
all members of a family [Author not known, 2004]

My decision to take up a career as a human service
professional
I chose human services as a career option because
I felt that I could contribute to the needs of
the society. In fact even though we have many
different kinds of professionals who are involved
in attending to needy and the sick, we find that
there is a lack of dedicated people who are committed
to the society as a whole.
I have seen that most professionals are content
with their own affairs and rarely venture to do
something that is good for the society.
The advantage that I see in my chosen career
is that I will have a lot of activities that are
socially relevant. I can contribute to the need
of the society and can also help to give the society
a new direction in tackling issues that are relevant
and mundane.
I do believe that the society will support any
new initiatives that are needed to better its
immediate needs. I only need to provide an impetus
to set the wheels of change moving.
There are also disadvantage with the career that
I have chosen. One of the biggest problems is
that I would not be making money as my contemporaries
in other fields may do.
I may also not witness any career growth. Similarly
there is always the risk that people may misinterpret
my concern for the society and try to antagonize
my actions out of fear or mistrust.
